Le pronom d’objet y

The object pronoun y translates to there, or it. This pronoun is placed in front of the verb, and replaces nouns in two situations:


1. à, à la, à l’, au, aux + an object/a thing/a place

2. dans, chez, sur, devant, derrière, sous, à côté de, près de + an object/a thing/a place


Je mets les clés sur la table.
J’y mets les clés. (I put my keys there.)


Nous irons à Toronto.
Nous y irons. (We will go there.)

Elle veut répondre à la question.
Elle veut y répondre. (She wants to answer it.)

J’ai trouvé le livre dans la boîte.
J’y ai trouvé le livre. (I found the book there.)
